The return trip from Germany had been uneventful and the aircraft and its crew were the second from the Squadron to return to Lissett where they were given permission to land immediately. The Pilot, F/Sgt. Anderson recalled that the aircraft drifted slightly away from the runway at a late stage of the landing approach. Since the runway length would not permit a delayed touchdown point he had decided to overshoot and go round again and applied overshoot power and brought up the undercarriage. At this point the number four engine cut and was immediately feathered by himself and the Flight Engineer, Sgt. Munday. They thought everything was under control and the altimeter was showing 400 feet above the ground when, still travelling at about 150 mph with the engines running at full power, the crash occurred. The aircraft began to disintegrate as it careered over farmland and through hedgerows. It came to rest in a field at the rear of the Blue Post public house in North Frodingham, East Yorkshire. The crash occurred at 22.15hrs. The air bomber was killed, Dick Munday was seriously injured and the remainder of the crew were taken to the Station Sick quarters at Lissett for treatment to minor injuries. |
